Fun jobs for your garden this spring

Fun jobs for your garden this spring

Make the most of the summer by preparing your garden for when the warmer weather finally arrives by completing these fun springtime jobs.

Prune your plants for summer blooms

Though it can feel counterintuitive to trim your plants when they're looking nice and full, pruning summer flowering plants now gives young shoots the chance to grow and will encourage lots of wonderful blooms later in the season. It will also help you to keep the plant under control.

Build a thrift shop for birds

All that pruning and chopping and mowing will leave you with lots of plant, grass and moss cuttings that needs to be disposed of. This spring, instead of throwing it away or dumping it on your compost heap, why not place it in an empty hanging basket and leave it somewhere that’s safe for birds. The birds will then visit your plant-based thrift shop for materials with which to build their nests.

Add spring flowering plants to empty beds

If your garden is looking a little forlorn after the winter, inject some life and colour into it by planting beautiful spring flowers. Potted bulbs such as narcissi, hyacinths, scilla and daffodils will provide that gorgeous pop of colour you need to tide you over until summer.

Build the perfect patio for garden parties

What better way to enjoy the summertime than outside in your garden, tucking into a delicious BBQ and surrounded by family and friends? Building a patio now will ensure you have it completed in time and are ready in case of any early heat waves. Natural stone paving is a fantastic material for building perfectly level, long lasting and highly attractive patios.

Create your very own mini meadow

Help the bees, butterflies and other insects thrive this summer, and add a beautiful display of colourful flowers to your garden, by planting your own mini meadow. Sow native wildflower seeds in trays or modules and then transfer to a flower bed or plant pot in time for when the hungry insects come crawling.
